An Icy Memory

Snow Day

By Mary Laude, BS ’79, business

A strong memory I have is when the University closed, canceling all classes, in 1977—something unheard of at the time! The reason was the temperature of -10° F (-60° F with wind chill).

I remember my roommate and I (we lived in Weston Hall) deciding to put on layers of clothing and parkas, hats, gloves, and scarves, to walk the very short distance to the Snack Bar, to see just how cold it was. It was COLD!

The following year, 1978, saw another University closing, because of snow. It was only three feet! Come on, guys, I thought, after I had trekked to class, not even dreaming that it might be canceled!
